Flushing out Beverage Branding Competition with Flyer Placement

If you're a marketer in the beverage and alcohol industry, one of the most underestimated spots for advertisements is the restroom.

Yes, you read that correctly, I said restroom.

There’s no need to feel uncomfortable, the restrooms in bars and restaurants are prime real estate that beverage and alcohol marketers should take advantage of. Many of your customers frequent this area to “take care of business,” so it’s a perfect opportunity for you to tell them more about yours.

Placing ads at the optimal optical level such as above urinals, on stall doors, and beside or behind mirrors is crucial to generating brand awareness, product interest and increased sales. Think about it: you have the target market’s undivided attention for two-to-five minutes; that’s valuable time to reach a captive customer audience who is ready to spend. Not to mention, the cost is relatively inexpensive compared to other marketing tactics, and you're likely printing similar creative already.

Placing flyers, posters or other advertisements in the restroom can help consumers pick out their next drink or realize "Oh, I should come back later in the week when XYZ beer is on tap or ABC's 2011 vintage is on special." It’s an opportunity for suppliers, distributors and retailers if executed properly. Here’s how:

  1. When advertising in the restroom, it’s important to make the ad as unobtrusive as possible since it will be placed in a private space. Be creative, but not offensive.
  2. The advertisement must have a clear message to make an impact on the audience and encourage repeat purchase. The key is to not overwhelm the consumer but to inform and remind them of your brand which will lead to future sales.
  3. This is a great medium to display promotional deals, special offers and events in the local area showcasing your brand. Keep the advertising fresh by changing creative once a week.
  4. Don’t limit yourself to toilet-area. Think of other eye-level ad placements like above or near the “employees must wash hands” sticker, in the hallway leading to the restroom or around the bar area.

At Brandmuscle, our tagline is #OwnLocal, but in this case we encourage you to own the restroom and flush out the competition. It’s that simple.
